Eco School - Poly Tunnels
Our poly tunnels were put up in spring 2006 and we got everyone in the school to plant something in the summer term, from tomatoes and courgettes to potatoes and maize, as well as flowers and plants which we sold before the holidays. When we came back in August we had lots of produce which we had grown and pupils started to use some of it in Home Economics classes.
Here is one of the polytunnels. We have moved some benches here so people can sit down if they're working with the plants, while we moved all the planters here for the summer holidays so they were easier to water.
It's like a jungle inside!
Here are some tatties (or potatoes if you prefer) which we grew in planters made from old tyres. We grew some inside the poly tunnels and some outside. The ones inside grew much bigger.
We tried growing maize, or sweetcorn. This was an experiment as no-one we knew had grown them before, but they worked.
Here you can see the sweetcorn cob - just growing nicely.
Here are some tomatoes - not quite ready to eat yet.
We knew that courgettes would grow as other people on Unst grow them but we got some nice big specimens.
We also got some really nice carrots.
We also left a few flowers in the poly tunnels over the summer.
This poppy has gone to seed.
Andrew and Kiera grew sunflowers but they got so big we had to move them outside!
