I was here in 1969-71, another Forces child. I remember getting to school by lorry through the snowdrifts, and playing on the frozen pond (and getting into trouble for doing so!) After four decades I'm planning a holiday to Unst next year and will make sure to look in at the school. Best wishes. Graham

I've been visiting Unst (via Internet) for two or three years and some day, perhaps I'll visit in person! In the meantime, you have a fascinating island with a great history. I am from the USA, in the Midwest state of Ohio (but I have Viking ancestors-does that count?!) Thanks for a wonderful web site.

Nice to see that BJHS is still going strong! I was a pupil at BJHS in secondary 1, from August 1975 to March 1976 before being shifted away from the area (my father was a lighthouse keeper at Muckle Flugga for nearly 4 years). I remember that teaching at the school was of a very high standard. One teacher in particular, Mr. Polson who taught Geography and French, was truly inspirational. So much so, that years later I went on to do a degree in Physical Geography, followed by a second degree in a related subject Planetary Science. I also have to mention that I had two very good friends at BJHS, who were in the same class as me, Andrew Smith and Jane Robertson, who both lived in the Baltasound area at the time. Keep up the good work BJHS, and continue to inspire others!

Yet another forces brat here! We were posted to Unst in June(ish) 1980 until early 1982. Found the site via the Wikipedia entry for Baltasound - can't believe I still remember parts of the school! I was only 6 and a half when I went to school there, but can remember some things, such as doing a musical number (to Shakin' Stevens!), and a lot of play outside, and getting told off for talking too much (!!) and having to sit "under the blackboard" a lot!! Great to see that the school is still going from strength to strength!
